Singer-songwriter Megan winsor, has been a longtime collaborator, and in our third project together, I wanted to prioritize the elegant simplicity of her on stage presence. The song's introspective, sorrowful repetition gave us an awesome foundation to experiment with spontaneity while shooting -- gathering shots from random moments, and relying on Megan's interactions with her physical settings to capture a mood.
Process
The song's visually driven lyrics and repetitive melody gave us room to play with light and objects. Music videos work best when giving each section of a song a unique visual cue and identity, and so, in order to keep us on an extremely small budget, we utilized my family home as a nostalgic setting that Megan could respond to, and feel trapped by, as evidenced in these reference images we sourced for our pitch deck.

The pre-chorus sections of the song were dominated by highly descriptive scenes, that almost scripted themselves. The challenge here was representing these spaces while keeping the video stylistically cohesive and within our scope. We opted to shoot these outside at dusk to push viewers to imagine the scene through lyrics and small scale visuals as seen in this description from our pitch deck.

Finding recurring imagery to reference is key in something as interpretive as a music video. We wanted to capture The feeling of being adrift, and the loneliness of lacking direction, through flowers in water as shown in these reference images from our pitch deck.
